The baptism of Jesus

If there is an event of Christ's life about which the four Gospels are unanimous, it is that of his baptism. This is the starting point for public activity of Jesus. Until then, we know very little about it.

But at the same time, if there is an embarrassing event in the life of Jesus, this is it! Why Jesus is the son of God Most High, who committed no sin, therefore he should be baptized, for forgiveness just because that practice baptism John is an act of repentance ?

Before answering this question, let's look at this character a bit enigmatic John the Baptist. Luke is Jesus' cousin, also a child of a miraculous birth. It is an ascetic, retired to the desert, wearing an animal skin and feeds on honey and locusts. He baptized in the Jordan Press and the crowds to repent, to escape the wrath of God. Those who confess their sins will be cleansed by being immersed in water. Once baptized, these people became disciples of the Baptist.

So how can we understand that Jesus requested baptism of repentance of John? It is reasonable to assume that John was the spiritual master of Jesus. In being baptized, Jesus recognizes the relevance of preaching and authority of John the Baptist. Moreover, Jesus baptize him, too. But for Jesus, the moment of baptism becomes something almost mythical: behold, the heavens opened, the Spirit of God manifests himself down in the guise of a dove and a voice is heard: You're my beloved son, in you I enjoyed it!

Obviously, nobody today can say that everything went well, but what is important is the meaning of this experience. For Jesus, it becomes obvious that he has a unique vocation, he realizes at this point. He will announce that the Kingdom was near, he is even in our midst. But even more, by his very person, received by this vocation, Jesus is the manifestation of God's Kingdom.

Baptism is a sacrament. That is to say the visible sign of invisible grace of God for us all. The grace and love of God is first. God loved us even before we loved him or us to manifest any gratitude to him and before we even aware of his love. So this need to understand infant baptism: a sign that God loves as a father, as a mother, even before the child is the mere idea that there may be another father than his father, mother or other his mother.

You are my son, my beloved daughter-e. In you I take delight. These words of the God of heaven are for everyone. Although this is a unique event, we do not perhaps remember our baptism. It is certainly a very strong sign of the love our parents have worn. They wanted to put our public life under the gaze benevolent God, we trust in God's arms of love.

Thus, baptism is not only an act of repentance. It is the moment in a life where the spirit comes from heaven to meet us. For Jesus, this was an opportunity to hear he was the privileged son of his Father in heaven.

Spirit materialized in the form of a dove. Bird of peace par excellence. Thus, the look on God asks each of us is a look of love and peace given to us from even before we realize it. For us too, although we have not kept in memory, was an opportunity to receive the Spirit of God in heaven. This was also the revelation in the heart of our vocation that is ours later: that of being in the image of Christ, the son and daughters of God, messengers of love and peace.

What better gift than to be loved by the Father! Above all, the love of God is there. Even today, those words resonate in our hearts: You are my son, my beloved daughter-e is in you that I enjoy.

Amen.

Who are these magicians?

What do we really know of the Magi? Scripture tells us about the travelers? They come from East and follow a star. They will pay tribute to the child that they see the king of the Jews, bring him gifts. Then go.

It was only much later that the tradition has seen them three and gave them names: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. She saw in them the ambassadors of the pagan nations in recognizing the newborn Jesus a king.

The word Magi is questionable as to its meaning: priests, magicians, astrologers. Presumably these men were used to observe the sky. And it is in the sky they noticed a star unusual, so unusual that they set off to follow him. Did they know where the light was going to drive?

These mages, scholars may have relied. They abandoned their convictions, some of them know, to go to meet the unknown.

arrived in Jerusalem, they do encounter a king, but not the star designation. And again they have confidence. They listened to the scribes, those themselves who, through their knowledge of scripture, should have to march to go, them, honor their king.

travelers are finally in Bethlehem of Judea, the promised child. King. But not a king dressed in purple, covered with gold. No, they came to see a newborn child, dressed in swaddling clothes and lying in the straw. It is they, the magicians who will give him gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Finally, making once again rely on these signs to guide them, they listen to the dream of a night and go back to their country by another road, and disobedient to King Herod, but obedient the voice of God.

Trust. Watch and listen signs, then return to her daily, but marked by the meeting of the incarnation of the promise of God. That's what makes this story. If these scholars had special knowledge, they agreed to listen to their heart, and from there into the unknown to make a meeting that changed their lives. They agreed to dispose of their wealth, to be led by some sign that was beyond them.

Today, for each of us, this story has something to say. What do we know about our future, days, weeks or months come. Are we not like the Magi, walking into the unknown? But as the wise men, we do not walk blindly. We follow a sign given by God: love of God has taken shape in Jesus Christ. And we live by faith, this promise that the same Jesus Christ is with us always until the end of the world.

Even today, these wise men invite us to go after them, trusting. Ready to get rid of too reassuring certainties to go humbly to meet the Lord. Day after day, in the most ordinary of our everyday lives, God gives us signs of his presence and his promise Love: a meeting, a word, a glance, a gesture exchanged are many concrete signs that remind us of his love. Renewed love and visible as far as we open our heart to welcome ... Just as the Magi from the East.

In April 1756, when a large French amphibious expedition invaded the island of Minorca, general Blakeney, the governor of the island, retired to Fort St. Philip de Mahon with his four infantry regiments (4th, 23rd, 24th and 34th). Fort St. Philip, which commanded the town and harbour of Mahon, was probably the most elaborate fortress possessed by the British, and was inferior in strength to few strongholds in Europe. Apart from the ordinary elaborations of the school of Vauban, it was strengthened by countless mines and galleries hewn out of the solid rock, which afforded unusual protection to the defenders.

On April 18, the French landed unopposed at Ciutadella, at the north-western end of Minorca. By April 20, the entire French army had disembarked.

On April 22, a French advanced party took possession of Mahon without meeting any resistance, Blakeney having already retired into Fort St. Philip. M. Raulin de Belval, lieutenant-colonel of the Royal Italien regiment, was immediately appointed commander of Mahon.
